1. Tawhid – introduction
- Tawhid is the main message that all the messengers brought to the world, from Adam (AS) to the final messenger Muhammad ﷺ.
The root of the word
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Wahada (وحد) – root | — |
| Wahid (واحد) | One |
| Wahhada (وحّد) – verb | "Tawhid" is derived from this |
| Tawhid (توحيد) | Making one, singling out, unifying |
- In this way the word is used to mean the belief in one God (monotheism).
In Islamic usage: accepting Allah alone as the one God and obeying Him = tawhid.
2. The three meanings of tawhid
(1) Allah is the Creator of everything
He is the Owner of everything; He provides all that is needed; He governs this universe.
| Verse | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 39:62–63 (az-Zumar) | Allah is the Creator of all things and the Guardian over all things; the keys of the heavens and the earth belong to Him |
| 40:62 (al-Mu'min / Ghafir) | That is Allah, your Lord, the Creator of all things; there is no god but Him; so how are you turned away? |
| 23:88–89 (al-Mu'minun) | In whose hand is the dominion of all things – who protects and against whom there is no protection? They will say "Allah's." Say: "Then how are you deluded?" |
(2) Allah alone is worthy of worship
| Verse | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 21:25 (al-Anbiya') | We revealed to every messenger: there is no god except Me, so worship Me |
(3) Allah is perfect and free from every fault
| Verse | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 112:1–4 (al-Ikhlas) | Allah is One; He is Self-Sufficient (needs no one); He does not give birth, nor was He born; there is none equal to Him |
| 42:11 (ash-Shura) | There is nothing like Him; He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing |
Summary: tawhid calls people to worship and obey Allah alone. The reasons are:
- Allah is the Creator of everything
- He is the One who governs
- He is free from all faults, perfect
Memory tip: Creation – worship – perfection (He is the Creator; worship is for Him alone; He is without fault).
3. The importance of tawhid – four proofs
| No. | Proof |
|---|---|
| 1 | The Quran states that all the messengers called people to accept and live by tawhid |
| 2 | The Quran contains many verses stressing tawhid, including a whole surah (Surah al-Ikhlas) |
| 3 | Tawhid has been made an essential condition for good deeds to be accepted |
| 4 | Paradise has been made forbidden to those who reject tawhid |
Evidence
(39:65 – az-Zumar) – a condition for good deeds – meaning: It has been revealed to you and to those before you: "If you associate partners (with Allah), all your deeds will be wasted, and you will surely be among the losers."
(5:72 – al-Ma'idah) – Paradise forbidden – meaning: Whoever associates partners with Allah, Allah has forbidden Paradise to him, and his refuge is the Fire; the wrongdoers will have no helpers.
